One Hundred Push Ups, Redux
August 10, 2009 on 5:28 pm | In Health & Fitness, Personal | 1 CommentAfter completely falling off the push ups wagon, last week, for no apparent reason, I decided to do an exhaustion test and see where I was at. I managed to bang out 50 push ups! Recall when I started last time, I only was able to manage 50.
So I resumed/restarted at Week 3, column 3, day 1, on Saturday, and continued on with day 2 today. So far, so good, and boy do my shoulders ache.

I could not keep up w/ their sets/reps/rests, and kept having to repeat weeks, demote myself to lower columns, etc. Eventually I got sick and quit completely for a while. Later, I read a tweet about someone doing 400 a day, and thought that even if I didn’t do a single set of 100, there had to be value in doing a few hundred a day. So I have my own little system now, where I have a stack of poker chips equal to the amount I’m going to do for the day. It’s currently 160. I don’t worry so much about set/reps/rests. I just do as many as I feel like, then move the chips into another stack. I repeat in any combination of sets/reps until all the chips are gone. I try to do it all in less than 30 minutes, but the bigger goal is just to do the target amount, regardless of how long it takes, or how many sets it takes. Each day or two I add 5 more chips to the stack, w/ the goal of getting to 400 a day. When I’m there, if I’m not already able to do a single set of 100, I’ll focus in on that, while still attempting to maintain 400 a day total.
