On Fresh Ubuntu, Fiber Optics, and Divorce

Okay all, I’ve been silent for far too long, and I figured it was time to come out with some official statements for the benefit of the (albeit small) community that has formed around the Fresh Ubuntu podcast, and also for my other friends whom I haven’t had a chance to touch base with on a one-to-one basis.

Harlem and I have decided to indefinitely put the Fresh Ubuntu Podcast on hiatus. We may do special episodes from time to time, but neither of us has the time or energy to devote to a long-form podcast right now. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that a bunch of Fresh Ubuntu regulars whom you will know (and perhaps love) have said they will be willing to participate in a new spinoff podcast, the Man Page Minutes. The plan is to take the MPM segment of FUP and separate it. To liven things up a bit, I will still likely cover some Linux and FLOSS news and probably have occasional guest segments. The site is not yet active, but will live at (and, for consistency). If you would like to volunteer to produce a segment of MPMs with a consistent theme, please contact me and let me know!

As for the EC Fiber project, I have stepped down from the governing board. Contrary to popular rumors, this was not because of any sort of brouhaha or political issue, etc. with the project. I had to do this because I am no longer living in the town of Stockbridge, Vermont. This is because…

I filed for divorce last month. My wife and I have differences which we will not be able to work out. I will not go into any details in this space, but I am reconnecting with old friends, practicing Aikido more regularly, and buckling down to study for my SANS certifications to keep my head above water. I do appreciate all of the continued support, well-wishes, and prayers that I have gotten from all of my friends. You know who you are, and I am so very grateful for your support.

  1. Hey Peter, sorry to hear about the divorce. Good luck with that. As for the show, I’m sorry to see it put on hiatus, but life is life and I’ll have to deal.

  2. I think you’ll find the Man Page Minutes may have a lot of the same open source goodness that FUP had.

  3. Been there, done that, lost the T-shirt ;). Hang in there, Peter. Things do get better, eventually.

Sorry, too, to hear of the retirement of Fresh Ubuntu. It was fresh, and you and Harlem had a great rapport. Looking forward to MPM.

  4. Hello Peter,
I am a long time listener of Fresh Ubuntu. I just wanted to thank you and Harlem for you efforts on the show. I had always looked forward to each episode you guys podcast. Good luck on the Man Page Minutes Podcast. Hopefully, with community support, it will blossom like Hacker Public Radio.

  5. Have you worked out the $/lb yet? I went the $15 book route, but know someone who could use something more like this.

  6. I haven’t, but I spend approximately $300/mo on “diet food,” plus effectively one meal per day on “regular food.” Overall, I’m guessing I spent about $13/day on food, but it’s not fair to say I’ve spent $1560 on the diet since June, as I would have spent a comparable amount without the diet anyway.

  7. Thanks, Peter, quite helpful.
